Please note that the winter road is deteriorating quickly. We hope to keep the road open until Friday April 4 to allow for some freight for the communities to travel up the road.
Unfortunately, the weather forecase looks like warmer daytime temperatures for the next few days. We are asking that people stay off the road during the daytime to prevent further damage and travel at night if you need to use the road.
Please notify your family members as to when you are leaving so that they have an estimated time of arrival.
Thank you to all of the hard work by our contractors and staff. Please do not litter and carry your garbage out with you.
As a reminder, here are the usage guidelines for the JBWR (borrowed from the Wetum road guidelines):
- The James Bay Winter Road is Use at your own risk

The James Bay Winter Road connects the communities of Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, and Kashechewan to Moosonee through the annual construction and maintenance of an ice road. From Moosonee there is a rail link to the main Ontario provincial highway system at Cochrane.
The James Bay Winter Road is operated and managed by Kimesskanemenow LP, a limited partnership between the four communities it connects, Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, Kashechewan and Moose Cree First Nations. The word kimesskanemenow is a Cree word which means our road.
This website provides road users with up to date road status and conditions, and provides access to the past newsletters, employment opportunities with Kimesskanemenow LP, and contact information.
