Road Opening to Heavy Traffic Notice

Effective February 10, 2026 at 7:30 am the James Bay Winter Road will be opened to vehicle traffic to a maximum Gross Vehicle Weight of 37 500 kilograms or 80 000 pounds from Moosonee to Attawapiskat.

Please drive with caution, as there is still heavy equipment working on the road. (water trucks and graders). There are also flooding activities ongoing at various water crossings.  Due to the large amounts of snow this year, there are narrow areas on the road.

Please be aware and use caution when approaching heavy equipment and flooding crews. A big THANK YOU to all of the crews working on the road who have worked in very difficult conditions - we couldn't do this without you.

ABOUT US

The James Bay Winter Road connects the communities of Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, and Kashechewan to Moosonee through the annual construction and maintenance of an ice road. From Moosonee there is a rail link to the main Ontario provincial highway system at Cochrane.

The James Bay Winter Road is operated and managed by Kimesskanemenow LP, a limited partnership between the four communities it connects, Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, Kashechewan and Moose Cree First Nations. The word kimesskanemenow is a Cree word which means our road.

This website provides road users with up to date road status and conditions, and provides access to the past newsletters, employment opportunities with Kimesskanemenow LP, and contact information.
